UN appeals for the Olympic Truce during London 2012 Games

The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, and the President of the 66th UN General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, have called on all UN Member States to observe the traditional Olympic Truce from today’s start of the Games of the XXX Olympiad, on 27 July, until the close of the XIV Paralympic Games, on 9 September in London.

In his message, Ban Ki-moon recalled that “today, sports and events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games break down barriers by bringing together people from all around the world and all walks of life. The participants may carry the flags of many nations, but they come together under the shared banner of equality and fair play, understanding and mutual respect.”

For his part, the UN General Assembly President noted that “The Olympic Movement aspires to contribute to a peaceful future for all humankind through the educational value of sport. The Games will bring together athletes from all parts of the world in the greatest of international sports events as a means to promote peace, mutual understanding and goodwill among nations and peoples — goals that are also part of the founding values of the United Nations.”

About the Olympic Truce

The Olympic Truce, which dates back to the 9th century BC, supports the idea that throughout the Olympic Games, individuals, not countries, compete against each other in peaceful sport without the burden of politics, religion or racism.

In 1992, the International Olympic Committee introduced the concept of the Olympic Truce to the modern Olympic Games, and in 1993 the United Nations General Assembly urged its member states to observe the Olympic Truce. Sebastian Coe, on behalf of the UK government, presented the Olympic Truce Resolution for the 2012 Games, which for the first time received the unanimous support of all 193 UN Member States. Through this document, the UN invites its Member States to observe and promote peace before, during and after the Games in order to serve as a window for dialogue and to protect the interests of athletes and sport in general.

Sohail Abbas was born 9 June 1977 in Karachi. He is a field hockey defender, penalty corner specialist and the captain of the Pakistan Hockey Team. He is the highest goal scorer in the history of field hockey, with his current goal tally at 345 on 13.06.2012.

Background:

Sohail Abbas came from a sporting family; his father, Syed Iftikhar Hussain, was a former first-class cricketer. He represented Karachi as well as Pak Crescent Club, famous for producing Zaheer Abbas. Sohail is eldest of three brothers. Raheel Abbas his younger one is an IT professional and a Professional / First Class Cricketer also involve in Media Doings as well. Sohail has often said that his inspiration came from his uncle, Safdar Abbas,a left-winger who scored against Argentina during the 1973 World Cup as 16-year-old boy. Sohail is keen to emphasize the part played by Safdar, who, Sohail says, inspired him as a youngster.

International career:

When Sohail Abbas made his international debut during the 7th Pak-India series 1998, his role was only to come from the bench for penalty corner drills. His debut was at Peshawar's Lala S.M. Ayub Hockey Stadium on Saturday, 28 February 1998. Pakistan manager Islahuddin Siddiqui affected a substitution midway through the tie, but failed to make an impact. He failed to score in three penalty corners as Pakistan won 4-1. The following day, on 1 March 1998, in the second test at Rawalpindi's Army Hockey Stadium, Abbas announced his arrival on the international scene in dramatic fashion, scoring a drag flick from a penalty corner which proved to be the match-winner in Pakistan's 2-1 victory.

When the rule was changed after the 1998 World Cup, he was not considered for the 16th Commonwealth Games by coach Shahnaz Sheikh. But he staged a comeback to win silver in Lahore's 20th CT and bronze in Bangkok's 13th Asian Games in the same year. After serving Pakistan for almost 14 years, Abbas was awarded with the captaincy of the national hockey side for the Azlan Shah Cup and London Olympics 2012.

Olympic Closing Ceremony Overview

Olympic closing ceremony while comparing to the opening ceremonies, many of the acts of the closing ceremonies are governed more by tradition than official mandate. Usually flag bearers from each participating country enter the stadium in single file, and behind them march all of the athletes without any distinction or grouping by nationality. The blending of all the athletes is a tradition that began during the 1956 Summer Olympics at the suggestion of Melbourne schoolboy John Ian Wing, who thought it would be a way of bringing the athletes of the world together as "one nation." During the Summer Olympics the medal ceremony for the men's marathon is traditionally held during the closing ceremonies. Where in the program this occurs depends on the wishes of the organizing committee of the respective host city.

When the athletes enter the stadium, three national flags are placed on flagpoles one at a time while the corresponding national anthems are played: the flag of Greece on the middle pole to honor the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the flag of the host country on the left pole, and the flag of the country hosting the next Summer or Winter Olympic Games on the right pole. In 2004, when the Games were held in Athens, only one Greek flag was raised, although two Greek flags were raised in addition to that of Australia when the games were in Sydney the previous Olympiad.

The Olympic Flame is extinguished and, while the Olympic Hymn is played, the Olympic Flag that was placed during the opening ceremonies is lowered from the flagpole and carried from the stadium.Olympic Closing Ceremony will hold on 12 August 2012 at London's Olympic Stadium to mark the end of London 2012 Olympic. Rowing Introduction and Olympic Rowing Tickets

Rowing is a sport in which athletes’ race against each other on rivers, on lakes or on the ocean, depending upon the type of race and the discipline. The boats are propelled by the reaction forces on the oar blades as they are pushed against the water. The sport can be both recreational, focusing on learning the techniques required, and competitive where overall fitness plays a large role. It is also one of the oldest Olympic sports. In the United States, high school and collegiate rowing is sometimes referred to as crew.

While rowing, the athlete sits in the boat facing backwards (towards the stern), and uses the oars which are held in place by the oarlocks to propel the boat forward (towards the bow). This may be done on a river, lake, sea, or other large body of water. It is a demanding sport requiring strong core balance as well as physical strength and cardiovascular endurance.

While the action of rowing and equipment used remains fairly consistent throughout the world, there are many different types of competition. These include endurance races, time trials, stake racing, bumps racing, and the side-by-side format used in the Olympic Games. The many different formats are a result of the long history of the sport, its development in different regions of the world, and specific local requirements and restrictions.

Beach Volleyball Overview & Olympic Beach Volleyball Tickets:

Beach volleyball, or sand volleyball, is an Olympic team sport played by two teams of two players on a sand court divided by a net. As in indoor volleyball, the object of the game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent’s court, and to prevent the same effort by the opponent. A team is allowed up to three touches to return the ball. The ball is put in play with a service, a hit by the server from behind the rear court boundary over the net to the opponents. The rally continues until the ball is grounded on the playing court, goes “out,” or is not returned properly.

The team winning a rally scores a point (Rally Point System), and serves to start the following rally. The four players serve in the same sequence throughout the match, changing server each time a rally is won by the receiving team. Originating in Southern California and Hawaii, beach volleyball has achieved worldwide popularity.

New jetties in Santa Monica, California created a large sandy area for public enjoyment in 1920, planting the seed for beach volleyball development in that region. The first permanent nets began to appear, and people soon began playing recreational games on public parts of the beach and in private beach clubs. Eleven such beach clubs appeared in the Santa Monica area, beginning in late 1922. The first inter-club competitions were staged in 1924.

Most of these early beach volleyball matches were played with teams of at least six players per side, much like indoor volleyball. The concept of the modern two-man beach volleyball game is credited to Paul "Pablo" Johnson, an indoor player of Santa Monica Athletic Club. In the summer of 1930, while waiting for players to show up for a six-man game, Johnson decided to try playing with only the two people present. The game was forever changed. Though recreational games continue to be played with more players, the most widely played version of the game, and the only one contested at an elite level, has only two players per team.
